The UK seems to have gone mad for the royal wedding which is at the end of next week. Not only do we have to sit through all the news stories about “which dress Kate will wear” or about “his stag do secrets” but we’re also subjected to a barrage of tat lining the shelves of almost every shop and endless wedding themed TV shows. I even saw an advert for a royal wedding edition of a cooking show yesterday.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the Royal Family at all, and it’s good news that one of the princes is getting married. I also am not at all surprised that there are a lot of people trying to make as much money out of it as possible – mainly the media. Even so, I wasn’t expecting this much coverage in the days leading up to the wedding. To be fair, it’s mainly the lower quality newspapers which seem to be running most of the stories.
I was reading about a hotel the other day that has balconies in some rooms overlooking a street that the royal wedding will pass through. If you want to get a room there for three nights over the weekend then you’ll have to pay over £30,000! Of course, you get the full five star treatment and get to glimpse the prince and his new wife as they go past, but it seems like ridiculous money just for that. I have no doubt that they’ll sell the rooms though!
